It is a shame the most of the West will see the portrayal as accurate.

Well done.

The “hijabs” in the last pic are priceless. Love the wagon and the bunny.

OMG, and the wheels! I didn’t see the wheels! LOL

Haha! I see that the kid doesn’t have ‘fitna’ pets like cats and dogs, but a rabbit 😉

The muttawa needs to do something with the excessive hair on his legs! Oops, I noticed a non-Mahram’s legs 😦 Oh ye gods!

Love it!

18 01 2009
Haleem

I like it. Very apt.

PS. please explain the significance of the wheels!

Rhysz

@ Haleem

I think feet a are deemed too erotic, and they might seduce men from the faith.

Kind off reminds me of one of Aafke’s favorite movies: The Seven Dials….

[sir John Gielgud voice] These short dresses of today, much too revealing. Now in the past, a subtle hint of ankle was all we needed. [/sir John Gielgud voice] (sorry this is the best I can remember it.)

Damn! Just be glad that you don’t have to grow a beard of two fist’s length……… an I just bought new razors……GRRR

18 01 2009
Aafke

Burstmode, you are vague, I’m not sure what you mean.

Sabiwabi, 😀

American Bedu, 😀

Achelois; I thought I’d better keep the pet ”neutral” 😉
The point is, as long as you’re a woman, there’s no pleasing some people. Not even a sex-change would stop them from finding something haraam about you.
It’s actually the intelectually challenged ”scholar” who considered women too flirty if they had two eyes showing above the niqab which inspired me.
Because covering one of your eyes would still not be enough in the long run…

You are such an abandoned woman! Being mesmerised by a man’s legs!
But my fault in the first place for drawing them…..

18 01 2009
Aafke

Haleem, pretty feet in pretty shoes are also haraam… Sheesh! Can’t you see that for yourself? You’re getting slack!

Achelois… me too 😦

~W~ 😀 But not all the praise should go to me, don’t forget the insane scholars, and even the modern tendency to idolize the hijab!

Rhysz! spot on!
A beard is still not half as bad as being swayed in cloth in a very hot country. Right now I do it voluntarily, gloves and all…..

18 01 2009
Rhysz

@ Aafke

It’s common knowledge that hairy legs on a religious nut are seductive to the ‘always-ready-to-sin’ women!

18 01 2009
Rhysz

P.S.

When you grow a beard we’ll have that conversation 😛

I just don’t understand why you men always have hairs éverywhere…
And why we women are supposed to be hairless…
It’s not as if we go for hairy things… Perhaps it’s our preference for cats and dogs which make you think so.
But you are quite wrong, we women have pets because we like thier intelligence, companionship, and most of all Loyalty!!!! Try to cultivate those qualities and we might really start to like you!

18 01 2009

Don’t worry Achelois…I apparently am all whore since one…I’m not covering up at all, and I’m western…so it’s just a given.

Osama needs to take a chill pill…seriously!!

Are we to assume that those two females are related to him…if not,..why is he looking at “whores” in the first place?

18 01 2009
Aafke

BCIS, and all women, WILL YOU STOP WITH THIS HARAAM OBSESSION WITH THE MAN’S LEGS!!!!!!!!!!!

Coolred38, of course he’s not related to these women, look at the surprised expression on cartoon #1!
He is only doing his islamic duty in forbidding what is evil. Don’t throw logic at him, you don’t have the right to critisise him in the first place!

Oh, and, (snort) do you really think that if he was related to them they would be allowed out of the house???

@ Rhysz

You bought razors? You man-whore!

18 01 2009

Saudi in US

@burstmode, I have seen stronger cartoons than this in the Arabic press against the Ultra religious that vilify women for their dress. This is not just a western portrayal. In any event Aafke knows the difference between average Muslims and the ones that want to control the rest of us based on their opinion of Islam.

Aafke, the cartoon is very funny. I love how you captured the details. It reminds me of why I chose to keep my family in the US, so they do not get subjected to such harassment.

besides, while this cartoon might be mildly amusing to western eyes, I made it especially for my Muslim blogging-buddies whom I fully expect (hijab or not) to choke on their hot drinks and/or fall off their chairs, as they know how to appreciate the little details.

OMG too funny and sad at the same time. The wheels, hmm, lol, maybe rollerblades??

18 01 2009
Rhysz

But Aafke, certainly you must realise that satire is the greatest threat to rational and logical discourse in the history of existence? How dare you make fun of something that is from a different culture. I call blatant western neo-colonial supremasism on you! You, especially as a woman, are not allowed to have an opinion and you are definately not allowed to consider anything humorous and disseminating these vile thoughts, let alone exhibit them on the ‘interwebs’. Prepare for a firm scolding when next we meet.

Rhysz

18 01 2009

@ Rhysz, that was very weak, I doubt it will silence this non-conforming female. I think you first need to grow a long beard, get a muttwa stick, practice aiming at ankles, jumping in anger as you say SILENCE will also help etc. You got a long way to go 🙂

18 01 2009

Aafke–brilliant! bravo! 🙂 🙂 🙂 You were not wasting time while I was wondering where you were.

Burstmode–some might, but the source, the stated intent, and the target audience should go a long way to contextualize these neo-Danish cartoons.

Rhysz–try “Nederlandse eurocentrische feministische provocateur” ie “dutch eurocentric feminist provocateur”

Too funny. I am sure you have hurt some egos here, but as we know, these issues are all about the frail egos of the men in question anyway.

Besides, some men actually like the niqab. The one story I head was about the man who had been visiting his lover. He always wore the niqab and went into the women’s door. I dont remember how they were caught by the wife’s husband, but the story does detail the dual issues of the niqab!

19 01 2009
intlxpatr

LLLOOLLL, Aafke!

You are right – there are some who believe that we should not be seen in public. I don’t know if you are watching what is happening in Pakistan right now, but the Taliban has said they will bomb every girl’s school open after January 15, and kill girls caught attending. Imagine. The nerve. Women wanting to be educated.

Actually, I thought true Islam encouraged women to be educated?

“Taliban has said they will bomb every girl’s school open after January 15, and kill girls caught attending. Imagine. The nerve. Women wanting to be educated.”

The “funniest” thing about that is that not one so called Islamic govt will condemn them if they do….nationals will not riot…write scathing editorials in local papers…or at the very least suggest its Americas fault in someway….or better yet…Israels…hmmm.

LMFAO!!!!! All I have to say is: Holy crap Aafke. Holy freakin’ crap on a popsicle stick! This is brilliant.

In defense of burstmode up there, I don’t think s/he’s referring to your cartoons as much as the ignorance of people who’ll believe that they depict your average Muslim. You know, what with stereotyping being what it is and we being the extremists that we are. *rolls eyes in exasperation*

I’ve, thankfully, yet to meet anyone like your hilarious hairy-legged, bearded guy. But, then again I’ve never been Saudi Arabia and had my ankles smacked with a matwa stick for dressing like the whore of Babylon!! 🙂

Intlxpatr – that is truly revolting!!!

Aafke – How do you do it? You are totally hilarious and brilliant! The drawings are perfect and the dialogue is spot on. You should see about publishing these in a newspaper – no wait! On second thought, that might not be such a good idea. You might find yourself on the fatwa shortlist along with Salman Rushdie!

Rhysz, dream on….

S in US, he actually is making progress….

Chiara, seek treatment… Good idea!

srinivas, welcome to my blog. There is a small camera inside so the mahram have constant supervision. Ifd he doesn’t have time the whole ”outing” is taped….

Inal. NO. And no airco either. This way women will be less tempted to go outside. Another plus on this new model, as the current swathes of black cloths do not hinder some women to still want to leave the house…

AbuSinan, I am never worried by hurting some misogynists feelings.
I agree niqab can have it’s advantages, for both sexes…

20 01 2009
Aafke

intlxpatr, That’s disgusting! Yes, educations is a big thing in (real) Islam. There is an African country, (can’t remember which one, sorry, really bad memory) where one educated woman has managed to change to official outlook on wome’s education on a speech of the prophet.

Hi Aafke,

I’m new to your blog and I must admit, I really like it. LOVE this cartoon, it’s perfect! It looks like you drew and painted it yourself… really admirable 🙂

I think I’ll be a regular here.

20 01 2009
Sara

May I ask how you know so much about the culture in Saudi?

20 01 2009
Aafke

Specs, good of you to notice the disclaimer 😉

Coolred38, I’m sorry to have to say this, but I think all the ”Islamic” goverments have completely lost the intention of Islam and shouldn’t be allowed to use the word.

SouvenirsandScars, glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
I could have been even more mean; I could have dressed him in unremarcable westerclothes, so in a western invironment he’d be quite cofortable, while expecting women to be dressed restrictivly, inconveniently, and ver noticably. While insisting small girls also to be identified as sexual subjects.

Anyway, it’s only a cartoon, it’s not my resumé of the entire Arab world, it’s just my view on how ”covering” will never be sufficient for some stupid males.
And tho make a funny joke you have to exaggerate and simplify.
It’s plain silly if somebody can’t see that and thinks I don’t like ”Arabs” or ”muslims”. Actually this whole post is meant mostly for my muslim Arab friends. For fun.

Susie, 😉 better not make these too public!!!

Lat, Glad you enjoy! 🙂

Tee, glad to see another happy reader, 🙂

Sara, welcome to my blog, I was very ill and read a lot. And I have many friends supplying me with knowledge and ideas.

Achelois

@ Sara, Aafke did draw these cartoons herself!

@ Rhysz

Shaving legs is forbidden for men! You are indulging in haraam by shaving yoru legs to attract female glares. Now you can’t command Aafke to be silent unless the bristly hair on your legs grow back 😛

20 01 2009
Aafke

Achelois, yeah, hum, Rhysz can have furr growing on his legs, and he still will not be able to command me!!! 😉

oh, yes I drew the cartoons myself! All fatwa’s are to be aimed at me! Let’s put some extra emphasis on that!!!

Sara, I’m not always this funny, but the best bits are on the ”cream of the crop” page! 🙂 Enjoy! 😀

sorry to intrude again! what’s the purpose of wearing veil? i think the intention is that beauty of a girl / lady should not attract the opposite sex. isn’t it?

last year i had been to Universiti Sains Malaysia – had interaction with a young girl with sparking eyes – does veil stop eyes contacting? in fact, i was searching for my daughter in those eyes 🙂

This is hilarious. I love the bunny wagon. The little girl looks like R2-D2 in the last frame.

Every religion has its extreme conservatives. Y’all may find this funny — but maybe not — the late American political humorist Molly Ivins used to call conservative southern Baptists “Shiite Baptists.” She passed away a couple of years ago.

I can remember when conservative southern Baptists pointed and jeered at women in pants. And tsked over women who wore makeup. Maybe they still do. I live up north now.

22 01 2009
MaryAnn

Aafke you are very talented.

About the wheels…they might start squeaking and then that would draw attention to themselves and that would be haraam too. 🙂

Also, if it were to be rollerblades that would probably be haraam too because then they would be having fun and you wouldn’t want that either! 🙂

Susan

I just noticed that in each cartoon, his knees got higher up … elated at the “power” he was having over women, no doubt.

Yeah, you got the power.

22 01 2009
Susan

Rhondal, at some point – hopefully – they realize they’ve “hamstrung” the she-camel who came down from the mountains. The one that was supposed to roam free by the will of Allah, and the direction of Salih. And in turn brought a difficulty upon themselves.

Muhammed was brilliant. Where was the first mosque? Where the she-camel roamed freely and then finally came to settle down to rest. In the grove of the palms.

That’s beautiful, Susan. Thank you.

OutcastrebelChick, I aim to please… 😀

Srinivas, To hide the beauty of women to men who cannot control themselves is the ultimate goal of hijab. No matter what other reasons are given, listen long enough and this is the reason given nowadays.
And of course it doesn’t work that way. If all women are veiled, men will notice other things, like the manner of walking, the mopvements under the abaya… Like my brother Rhysz allready put forward; when in Europe women were obliged to be covered top to bottom, (and to wear stays) men got all excited about the glimpse of an ankle!

Lat 😀

Fatemeh: Glad you enjoyed! 🙂

Rhondah, you are right. It is a mindset. I covered that in my own words in the post about witch hunters

Witch-hunters: a list of warning signs

Mary Ann, right on both accounts!!! 🙂

Susan you are very clever to notice that.
Or very haraamly obsessed with the man’s hairy legs….

Mohammed was brilliant, and wise, and had great respect for women and she-camels… If only modern muslims would take him for an example!!!

Rhysz, # 1 is a common witch-hunter nowadays, # 2 is weird: have you noticed all those stepford wives have an overbite? And speak weirdly, with a pronounced lisp?
Why is that? Inbreeding?
And very bad fashion sense…
I don’t care how reactionary you are, how bigotted, brainwashed and stepfordy. That doesn’t free you to indulge in bad dress sense 😡

In the USA, many accept the values that built America and accept Islam. There are those that have distorted Islam in the name of the Prophet. Islam, to many Western eyes, has become a religion of intolerance. Many Christians consider it wrong and even cruel. What’s brought us to this point is the distortion created by men seeking to use the religion to dominate rather than to find the path to God. The distortion allows stereotypes to flourish as is seen in the cartoon.

I mean no offense to anyone with my words, only the thoughts of one that’s seen both sides.

12 06 2012
Aafke-Art

burstmode, look around you in the real world, wherever Islam becomes the majority minorities women and children will be made to suffer.
I’ve read the Quran you know, it’s all in there. Now some people in America ”accept” Islam, (and a good many also leave it again) but they are fed the sweety rosy glasses version. Besides I will never understand how people can blindly follow any belief system, especially women which is so flawed, so misogynist, and so full of nasty stuff, like killing all the infidels, the revolting descriptions of torture, a prophet who spend his time attacking unsuspecting villages, committing mass murder, rape, enslaving people, etc. etc.

And the same goes for Christianity.
It’s some kind of mental failing which makes people go for religion.
But luckily more and more people, especially young people, are waking up and realizing that these bronze age myths are immoral and totally outdated, there is no proof for invisible, nasty, immoral, attention craving sky-daddies.
And the more people realize this, the better chance we have of peace, stable societies, human rights and happiness.
