The Ministry of Erasion

30 03 2009

The Ministry of Erasion has ordered the erasing of images of pigs and musical instruments from English language teaching materials in privately-owned schools, along with the omission of everything that does not conform to Islamic teachings.
(Meaning anything which might look like fun or love, or anything good)

It’s good to know that students will no longer be subjected to the nefarious influence of the un-islamic creations of Allah.
But, although this is a good start, it is not nearly enough! Or as one Umm commented on the Saudi Gazette:

Thank you very much for correcting this issue in the private schools. However, what about the university English language textbooks ? There are a lot of Islamically inappropriate materials in them all. Do we turn a blind eye to this knowing well that this will have a sure effect on the students ? Please do something to remove correct textbooks that are being used by foreign language schools (Bell International) in government universities.

The Umm is right. What’s going on? Why is the black hand suddenly leaving out the universities??? There are lots of haraam things going on at universities! Some students even learn to think for themselves!!! There are even people in KSA who not only look at, or listen to, but actually: play haraam musical instruments!!!!!
It must be stopped!
Please comment and give your advice about how we can cleanse the earth from Allah’s haraam creations!

Bakheet Al Anzi, showing students the image of a pig so the Black Hand members can learn how to recognise one and how to black it out. The advanced class, Black Hand Members with exceptional selfcontrol, will be taught how cleavages look:ย  and how to black them out.

LOL….another great commentary and illustration. Nice work, Aafke!

Maybe they think once kids get to university age, they are not as easily influenced as young children would be. Or maybe they believe by that age, students should be able to make decisions for themselves and know not to get caught up in haraam ways of the evil West. Perhaps it’s the job of the parents and not the government to make sure the students “walk the line.” Really, why do they want the government so involved in their lives? It’s like they cannot use the toilet without government regulations on how to do it properly. Geesh.

That’s the impression I get anyway.

Aafke

Susanne, how can you be so flippant? Ofcourse students are easily influenced! And of course they need to be monitored and pushed in the right direction!
Why do you think the haya are so constantly occupied harrassing anybody, at any age???
And remember the 75 year old widow? Being caught ”in flagranti” in khulwa with two young men????

And thank you for pointing out the need to monitor peoples personal toilet habits, ablutions, and techniques for wudu. I will make sure this goes on Bakheet’s agenda for further study.

LOL. I had to smile when reading this article ๐Ÿ™‚ I found it funny because in chapter 4 of the ESL book taught during the orientation year for Saudi students has cultural tips about dating in different cultures. When going through the book I even learnt some interesting stuff ๐Ÿ™‚ about how matchmaking works in Japan. This book series are taught for many years to both male and female students, and up till now it hasn’t been changed. I consider the grammar content of it is above the 1st year student. Several people asked for the book to be changed because the student require easier level; however, the same series is still used.

I sometimes read such articles in the news paper, but in reality I don’t see them applied. I’m very interested and also involved in the education system in KSA — You know my plan is to be the Minister of Education after 20 years, so I’m getting ready ๐Ÿ™‚ Frankly speaking, I’ve never saw anyone asking us to change books or to throw them . It’s simple, if they don’t like a book, don’t sell it in bookstores and full stop.

What about love stories ๐Ÿ™‚ will they be confiscated ๐Ÿ™‚ one of the very first novels Saudi students read is Bride and Prejudice. Anyway, I should note that I’d not agree at all to teach books with obscene pictures or language — dogs/cats/horses/pegs or any other animals doesn’t require editing.

It’s a great Monday ๐Ÿ™‚

Aafke–Another one for the Cream of the Crop category! ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ Bakheet seems, like all good teachers, to be demonstrating the best technique–indelible black felt marker liberally applied. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Khalid–I’m shocked!! Japanese mating rituals are bad enough, but I hope your Saudi copy of “Pride and Prejudice” ended thusly:
“With the Gardiners, they were always on the most XXXXXX terms. Darcy, as well as Elizabeth, really XXXXX them; and they were both ever XXXXX of the warmest XXXXXX towards the persons who, by XXXXXX her into Derbyshire, had been the means of XXXXX them. ” ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€

Reminds me of Samuel Johnson:

After publishing the first Engish dictionary he was aproached invited by several upper-cllass ladies,
– “Thank you mr Johnson for not including any unapprorpiate words………..”
– ” Ladies, I’m suprised you knew where to find them!”

Pea brain all of them!

Aafke

Khalid, welcome to my blog! ๐Ÿ™‚
I am deeply upset to hear about your exposure to foreign mating rituals (What do Japanese people do exactely) (never thought I’d ask a Saudi bloke about mating rituals) But then from what I have heard from other Saudi friends, one can write a whole series of books on Saudi mating and dating tactics….

I think you are too modest! I would like to see you minister of education in 2 years!!! Get cracking!!!!!

You can do much worse with your first novel as ”Pride and Prejudice” ๐Ÿ™‚ Very intelligent, very funny, and excellent sharp view on nineteenth centurey mating rituals, and very moral! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And I have never spotted anything obscene in my books at school??? Why should there be? There isn’t!

Chiara, Bakheet has spend many of his formative years blacking out haraam pictures.

Rhysz… evil…….

American Bedu: It is a matter of great concern… The Black hand seems to be really slacking lately! Funnily enough thy are not too keen on getting lashings…. They prefer hunting down others and getting them lashed!

Ya-INAL! a pea-brain is the first requisite for getting the job! What did you expect?

I wonder what they plan to do with the medical textbooks. oh lord Gynecology texts in particular… With those very graphic images ..tsk tsk tsk haram haraam..black them out.

31 03 2009
coolred38

Radha…my friends Saudi nephew is here in Bahrain studying to be a doctor. I often go over some material with him as I find it very interesting. Some time back they were on the gynecology section and when I went in his room the book was lying open to a very colorful visual pic…so I casually sat down and started reading about it and thumbing through the section. Then his aunt came in (my best friend) and exclaimed in horror that he and I were together looking at “porn” (she was kidding btw) and up till then he had been cool with it…discussing with me etc…but when she said the word “porn” he blushed a deep purple nearly and I thought he was out for the count. It was hilarious.

I asked him…ok only just now you can imagine that as porn…what about when all of you are in class…all you boys mixed with girls looking at and discussing this “porn”…he looked at me very serious like and said

In the classroom we are doctors (wannabees anyhow) and take it very serious…out of the classroom we are merely men…lol. Nice!!!

Well his aunt asked him…how can you discuss this with Leeann..this isnt a classroom…he said…she is an american..and very smart and opened minded…lol.

INAL, ”-able to leap small cars to grab onto hijabs colored โ€œnon-blackโ€ in a single bound” Noooo!!! They really do that too????
You forgot:
-minimal hygenic tendencies
-literacy not required..
Tag? I am tagged again???? Will check out your blog!

Rhysz: I got it too!!!! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Radha, they can’t block those out for the students, but if you live in KSA and you want to google information on ”Breast-cancer” you will find all info-stes blocked, becasue of the word ”breast”. I always wondered though what goes on in the mind of a man who wants to become a gynocologist…

Coolred, great story.
Typical though: western women are treated and seen as different.

Achelois: sorry, your comment is out! Anyway, I am the real evile genius here. I’m expecting a fatwa anyday… ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I donโ€™t know where you got this tidbit of information, but none of the breast cancer sites are blocked here in Saudi Arabia. Come on people let us not get carried away out here……

And by the way this my first comment on your blog, so be easy on me…

31 03 2009

A Saudi man, Welcome to my blog ๐Ÿ™‚ I was told that bit of info by friends who live in KSA and tried to google some information on breastcancer.

I am always easy on my visitors!
Unless they get me irritated…..

Aafke,

I love your artwork. If tattooing wasnt haram I’d ask you to draw up a new tattoo design for the 1″ by 1″ spot I still have left to cover! LOL

Awww, Aafke. The “Sharpie” fix isn’t solely a tool of the Muslims. As a former Catholic school girl I can attest to the use of such censoring tactics in our school library books growing up.

I have to say though, all it did was make us all the more curious. Actually the books that the kids went for THE MOST were the ones with all the blackouts!

But blotting out the image of a pig? Serious? Did you actually hear about that from somewhere? I have a coffee mug with a cute little calico piggy on it and my kids always ask to use that one.

Must I destroy it? If loving pictures of piggies is wrong, I don’t want to be right! LOL!

Oh no! My husbands time in Saudi is surely at an end! Bakheet Al Khrazi
will discover his distinctly porcine Norwegian last name and, and Black It Out!
No wonder I cannot seem to acquire a visa–I have a haraam name.
Aafke this is brilliant.

31 03 2009
sirius

And also–all this lashing talk–it’s a slippery slope to naughty things. Think of all the haraam sites devoted to lashing–I’m sure Bakheet thinks of these things a lot!

31 03 2009
Achelois

Well the drawing of the female and male reproductive systems is blackened or super glued over with stiff paper in Biology books. Sufi sites are blocked. Some shia sites are blocked. Many Jewish sites are definitely blocked. YouTube videos that show Saudis in odd situations (Aafke may remember one I sent her!!) are also blocked.

31 03 2009
Aafke

AbuSinan, well that’s not much of an honour, to design the last square inch…. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
I do design tattoos now and then… what did you have in mind

Sabiwabi, Nooooo! Really???? what did they block out???
Some black hand members can read the word ”Pig” on english and black that out too… They even black out ”Piglet” from ”The wond in the willows” As you can see on my post about the Black Hand:
https://clouddragon.wordpress.com/2008/08/27/the-black-hand/

Sirius, hmmm, Swedish is not a language which is considered very important by the Black Hand…
I’m not brilliant, it’s the news! I don’t want to write all the time about KSA, but the somebody sends me a lovely article again… And I can’t help myself!

31 03 2009
Aafke

Sirius… we can only guess… it is a fact that The Black Hand internet squad did ask last year for special access to ”certain blocked sites”…. One wonders why…

Achelois…. Why I do wonder, I mean it’s important to have knowlege in a perfectly halal marriage too??? They really condsider everybody guilty until proven otherwise.
How could i forget ๐Ÿ˜ณ so those videos are blocked as well? What do they hope to achieve?
It’s so ridiculous to block Shia and Sufi sites, sรณ selfrighteous! grrrrr….

I guess I spoke too soon Aafke. Just 15 minutes after writing my last comment THIS is what happened with my 4 year olds milk from breakfast.

I would be lying if I said that it didn’t send a chill up my spine.

Tattoo design in mind? Hum……..I have always thought about a really nice backpiece, covering the whole back. The vague idea would be horses around the sides, top, bottom, and the Dome of the Rock in the Middle.

I guess tattooing a mosque would be a double no no.

I do have several horses tattooed on me, including one I got of a zoomorphic viking horse design in Copenhagen a bit over a decade ago.

It is below a viking and above a celtic zoomorphic design of dogs. Sayf, my youngest son aged two likes to point at the viking and call it “guy” and talk to me about them.

The good thing is that I ask him if he ever wants a tattoo, even the fake kind, he says “no, no”!

“Black Hand Members”? Now that is a scary name. Reminds me of the “Red Hand Commandos” a murderous Protestant paramilitary in Ireland for whom any Catholic was a valid target for murder.

Sabiwabi… What can I say? You are being punished!!!!!

Waw! AbuSinan! Excellent! Just let me know when you change your mind, and I will design it for you! (I will even learn tattooing!) You never know, something may come up that tattooing is halal after all! ๐Ÿ˜‰
Do you watch Discovery? Miami Ink? Ami was totally shocked after he found out tattooing isn’t allowed in Judaism as well! (and he’s tattooed top-to-bottom!)

Your Sayf is very wise! He likes your tattoos, and will not get any of his own!

Tazeen… yes…. However, to cheer you up, I’m planning a description of the advanced class as well…

We liked Ami and Miami Ink. I think it is bogus that he didnt know tattoos were forbiden in Judaism. He was raised in Israel and served in the IDF. It is also well know that is many orthodox Jewish cemetaries you cannot be buried if you have a tattoo.

I liked him, but sometimes he pissed me off. Like the time he had a “gut wrenching” situation about tattooing a Christian tattoo because he was a Jew. First of all, by this time in his length tattooing career he had made up his mind long before about doing religious work, never mind the fact that it is clear that he isnt a practicing Jew himself. It is also interesting to note that he was never squeamish about doing Buddhist or pagan/wiccan, even Satanic tattoos.

Either way, much better than LA Ink, and a far site better than London Ink.

BTW, tattooing, if it wasnt haram, is a good profession. Going prices here in the DC area are 120+ an hour. My experience is that it goes for less in Europe, but not too much.

2 04 2009
Aafke

I agree it seems rather weird to me. I must have missed his squeamish episode about doing a christian tattoo, which seemsreally silly to me. I can image he has to do christian, and as you said more dodgy religions, tattoos all the time. Especially as he seems to be only nominally jewish in any case.
I agree though, better as LA ink, or London ink.

You are tempting me to learn tattooing and move to your part of the world….
I have no problems tattooing others, but never ever, ever, ever want any for myself…
Which is a problem if you want to look a bona fide tattoo-artist….

Seriously, I don’t know what to say. I grew up in the Emirates and we had a similar thing going on with certain images in our biology books blacked out. The kids figured a way to erase the markings without affecting the picture and one was the image of a mother breastfeeding her infant. It wasn’t like her entire breast was out, and nothing of it showed, yet it was good material for the black hand to work with. It is sad really that these people think covering up a breast here or some arms there is a way of educating their children.
Anyway, (there’s lots to say but for what good!) I simply LOVE your drawings! Keep ’em coming! :):):)

Tazeen, have some patience!!!!

Sabiwabi, no I haven’t…. interesting idea… ๐Ÿ˜€

Tee, Glad you enjoyed
Actually, courtesy by the insidious, anarchic Specs:
”spray a little deodorant on the black part, and quickly wipe away with a tissue paper. Ta-da, even the permanent-est black marker erased.”

2 04 2009
Abu Sinan

I wouldnt have an issue with a tattoo artist who didnt want tattoos themselves. Just because someone is an artist doesnt mean they would want to be a part of their art, as tattooing forces you to be if you get one.

You dont have to be an artist to do tattoos, but the best ones are. Judging from your art work here, you’d do great.

I know a few guys for whom tattooing saved them from lives of meaningless low paying jobs and they do rather well for themselves. Couple Harleys, cars, houses and vacations. Not bad.

You have me sooo convinced… Now to find an apprenticeship….
